Apartment 48
About
Apartment 48 is a NYC interior design company founded by Rayman Boozer. The company is known for its vibrant colors and patterns.
The Problem
If you're not a designer, picking the best color for an interior wall can be difficult.
Role
UX Designer and Writer
My Process
I designed an app that allows users to paint their space virtually using Rayman's approved colors. For this, I created wireframes and prototypes, iterated on designs, wrote microcopy, determined information architecture, and made sure designs were responsive.
Users
I worked with the company's founder to make sure his vision was realized. Through testing, I carefully considered how potential users interacted with the app. Additionally, I completed competitive audits which helped me analyze existing design apps.

Wireframes
Generating ideas quickly
For Apartment 48's process, I created paper wireframes to help get a better understanding of the project and to iterate on design ideas quickly. The paper wireframes formed the foundation for developing the app.

I picked my favorite paper wireframes and enhanced those ideas during the digital wireframe process. This allowed me to better hone the overall design and isolate areas that needed to be improved on.
Usability Testng
Refining the design
Users wanted to save the paint names in Rayman's designs. With that in mind, I refined the mockups by adding a picture of one of Rayman's designs and highlighted specific colors and paint names within the photo.

High-fidelity Prototypes
My figma process
I added multiple images to inspire the design and moved frames that didn't work to the top of the artboard.

I added detailed visual elements, interactions, and concise copy. This high-fidelity prototype provides a representation of the user interface and functionality, facilitating usability testing and final refinements before potential development.

Key Takeaways
What I learned
Apartment 48's app design empowers individuals to take ownership of their spaces and provides them the confidence to move forward with bold paint choices. During this process, I deepened my understanding of the unique needs of the company owner and how his needs intersected with the needs and preferences of users.
